Altered Box

June 29, 2009

I got up really early this morning to drive my family to the airport and when I got home, I didn't feel like sleeping. I just wanted to make something!

What on earth did I make at 5am this morning, you ask? Well, last night I was re-organizing my crafting stuff and I realized I didn't have a place for my postage stamps. I looked all around the house for a cute little box to put them in but I couldn't find one. But I did have a box of chocolates that I was going to toss in the garbage last night...

I emptied the contents into the trash and took the box and made this:

A snug little box to hold all my posting supplies.

I Got The Call!

June 26, 2009

At the beginning of this month, I spotted a cute little desk wall system from Pottery Barn Kids named Cameron and fell in love with it. It would be perfect to keep all my new SU! stuff and a nice place to do all my work. I had to have it.

Check him out! Isn't he gorgeous?! But instead of a nice, clean white (which I would have liked), I'm getting him in the nice deep espresso (so inking accidents or anything of the sort won't ruin him).

After some begging and pleading, I finally got the green light from the man of the house.

They had to specially order it for me since they didn't have any in store so that meant I had to wait 10 days for it to come in. I really didn't want to wait but I also really wanted Cameron so I decided 10 days wasn't so bad.

But 10 days come and went and I still didn't get a call (what's up with the inconsistent customer service, PBK?!). I was kind of disappointed. Until today. Today the phone rang and it was PBK! My Cameron finally arrived!

I'm so excited! I spent the entire morning cleaning up his room and my dear husband (aka the man who has to suffer through all my crafting obsessions) is going to pick it up with me tonight! Wheeee! I can't wait to show him off to everyone.

It Was All A Blur

June 25, 2009

Warning: This is a long post, but it may very well be worth your time and save your sanity.

So here's the story. Last night, I was gearing up to do my daily card (my self-imposed challenge) when I took out a couple stamp sets with really fine detail. Not a problem, I thought. That was one of the reasons I chose to go with Stampin' Up! in the first place - clear, crisp images despite the little details.

But when I got down to the stamping part, things didn't go as planned.

The images came out blotchy and the lines were unclear. I couldn't believe it. I just spent how much money on all these supplies and they weren't working the way I thought they would?

Okay, let's not panic here.

I remember reading/hearing from other demonstrators that blotchy images could be because they're new stamps and they need to be "conditioned" a little. Apparently there's a film of residue that gets left on the stamps when they're manufactured. So I stamped and stamped to make them less new and ended up with a page like this:

It didn't help. So I turned to my trusty pigment inks. I've always favoured the pigments inks. Well, I can't really say "always".. I mean, I just started stamping like a year ago so that doesn't give me a lot of history to go back on, but still. I feel like the pigment inks cover stamps so much better thank water-based inks but that's a whole other post. And the images turned out perfectly*.

But I didn't spend all my money on Craft ink pads! I bought all the Classic ink pads! I couldn't help it, I was really starting to panic here. I was ready to replace my whole collection.

Then I took a breath. And another one. And another one. I calmed myself down and tried to think rationally. I remembered a few techniques I had read about, got a few suggestions from my (very prompt) Upline, and finally called Demo Support this morning (and spoke with a very, very helpful lady named Marilyn).

In total, I got 4 suggestions and here's my ink-up line-up to show you how the techniques fared. (Hahaha, those Santas look like they could be saying "Pick me! Pick me!"

The first Santa just shows you what the original, untreated stamp produced.

Technique #1: Versamark
Instructions: Ink up the stamp with Versamark ink, lightly stamp it on a scrap paper and without washing it off, ink the stamp with your desired colour. The Versamark ink is supposed to help hold onto the ink better.

Verdict: I found it lightened the colour of the ink somehow but made the image a little less blotchy.

Technique #2: White Eraser
Instructions: Lightly rub a white eraser over the entire stamp to help get rid of the residue. You should be careful of leaving eraser bits on the stamp - this will affect your image.

Verdict: I found this to help a little bit. Looking at the picture again, now, it seems that the blotchiness came back but the super-inky spots aren't as dark.

Technique #3: Denim
Instructions: Gently rub your stamp on a piece of denim (i.e., a pair of jeans). Just make sure your stamp is thoroughly cleaned and maybe, don't try this on your favourite pair. I rubbed my stamp on the inside of my jeans just in case some ink came off (and it did).

Verdict: This one worked the best for me. The image came out much clearer and you can see the outlines of the detail much better.

Technique #4: Sanding Blocks
Instructions: Gently sand the surface of your stamps. Dawn does a video on this here. I didn't get to try this one out because I don't have the sanding blocks but according to her video, this method works out well too!

So there you have it!

Congratulations for reaching the end of this post. I bet you thought it was never going to end. I didn't think I'd make it either, but here we are! I hope this helped you.

*I should mention that I used non-SU! pigment inks for this. My one Craft inkpad was very clumpy which I later found out could be due to the ink separating and can easily be fixed by giving it a little squishing with the back of a spoon.

Card Gallery

June 24, 2009

Check out my card gallery over there ---> in my sidebar!

I've decided to display my pictures there for now, instead of writing a post for each of them.

And as it says, I'm hoping to set up shop in the near future to sell my cards, so stay tuned for that next step in my creating journey!

Brownie Mix in a Jar

June 18, 2009

Here's my last-minute, don't-know-what-to-do gifts for Nathan's teachers. He's been home sick all week so I haven't had a chance to do anything but his school had a picnic for their students and their families today so last night, I stayed up til 2am making these brownie-mix-in-a-jars.

I spent about an hour looking for a decent cookie recipe that would fit in a pint-sized jar and ended up using this recipe for a brownie that filled 4 pint-sized jars:

Brownie Mix in a Jar #1
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 cups granulated white sugar
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup vegetable shortening

Combine all of the dry ingredients with a whisk. Cut in the shortening thoroughly with a pastry blender. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It will keep longer in the refrigerator. Makes 8 cups, or enough for 4 one-pint jars yielding 4 batches of brownies.

When giving as a gift, attach the following directions to the jar:

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking pan. In a medium bowl, combine 2 cups brownie mix with 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Stir until just moistened. Spread in prepared pan and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until center is set. Makes 16 brownies.

I was really lucky that the inks and the ribbon matched so well. I just hope the brownies turn out okay.

Almost! Here!

June 10, 2009

I can not believe it. Ever since June 4th, I've been checking the UPS site at least 50 bajillion times a day to see if maybe they had decided to put a GPS tracking device on my packages so I could see where they are at each and every second.

Of course I had no such luck. I even had to go the entire weekend wondering where in the US of A my package was because they didn't bother to update it!

Then, today at 2pm, I found out it was in Windsor, ON. WINDSOR! That's like 3 hours and 50 minutes from my home! (Yes. I checked on Google Maps. Don't judge me.) So my package should arrive at my door at 6pm.. maybe 6:02pm if the UPS guy has trouble parking.

I waited and waited for a knock on the door, or for the phone to ring. And nothing. I cannot believe it. I wanted to cry.

I was really hoping to get my package tonight because ever since I placed that order, I've been thinking up a bunch of different projects to do and now all I need are the things to make them with!

Tomorrow. Tomorrow's the day. I can feel it. Well, that and because the UPS site originally said that tomorrow would be the delivery date.

You've Got Mail

June 5, 2009

I love mail more than ever now.

I've always loved mail. I check the mail every single day hoping to get something (does that sound greedy?). I think this all started back when I started getting letters in the mail. That was the most exciting thing ever.

Then, as my friends started traveling more, I got postcards in the mail. Even when I go on vacation, I send myself postcards! Really! I'm not crazy. I just want to have a memory of that trip for myself so one day, I can put all my memories together. I send Nathan postcards too so he'll have memories of our trips when he grows up.

Anyway, what was I talking about again? Oh, yes. I love mail.

It makes me sad when my mailbox is empty. Even if I get bills, I'm okay with that. But the best thing to get in the mail? A small package... which is what I got today!

Yay! Another stamp set (Cheep Talk) is here! And this time, I have to give a big thanks to Alison for sending me this set as a thank you for joining her team and for her super speedy mailing! Wheeee!

I love love love this set because of the cute little birdies. They're so... well, cute! I'm just a little bit intimidated by this set though, because unlike my problem yesterday (with having 'too little' images), this one has lots and lots of tiny images! So now I have to figure out which one goes with which block!

I don't know what to do! Oh wait, yes I do. I should go have lunch with my husband. We have a date.

Couple of Things

June 4, 2009

There's a couple of things on my mind tonight.

First of all, my order has finally been shipped! In about 6 days, I'll be receiving two big boxes filled with STUFF! Oh my, that sounded a little materialistic... We'll have to work on that.

Second of all, my dear husband went downtown to the Pottery Barn Kids to order a desk wall system that I had recently fallen in love with and thought would be a fantastic crafting and homework-ing table (for when my baby boy gets old enough to have homework. But that'll be a long time from now, right? Right?!). Am I spoiled of what?

And last of all, remember when I was all excited about my Yummy set? Well here's a little something that made me a tiny bit less happy. Dawn, over at Dawn's Stampin Thoughts had this great idea of splitting images for more use! I guess I should have thought of this myself because when I first got the set, I was a little disappointed that it was 3 images instead of 4. But being the naive person I am, I didn't change anything and put it on 'like we're supposed to'.

I blame that on the fact that before this, I used mostly acrylic stamps that can be unmounted and mounted to whatever position you like.

In any case, the fact of the matter is that rubber stamps and their labels are extremely permanent and there's nothing I can do about the set now. Oh well! Live and learn, I suppose.

P.S. Go check out Dawn's videos. She has tonnes of them and they're really helpful!

Yummy!

June 3, 2009

My second SU! stamp set (Yummy) arrived in the mail last night and I literally cheered when my husband ever so nonchalantly asked if I knew anyone from Vancouver.

While wandering through all those amazing crafty blogs out there, I discovered this set. All those amazing crafts and the cute sentiments! Once I set my eyes on it, I coveted it. I had to have it. The only problem? It was a retired set! WHAT?! Yeah, retired. Which meant there was no way possible I could get my envious little hands on them, except... a wonderful Kari Metzger just happened to be getting rid of a set. A brand new set!

I emailed her right away and a few days later, it showed up at my doorstep.

I am overjoyed. Ecstatic. Over myself with happiness.

I can't wait until Christmas rolls around. I'll bet a package filled with ooey gooey cookies would make an awesome gift. But a package of ooey gooey cookies with a tag that says "a little yummy for your tummy"? Even better.

Pun Fun Cards

June 2, 2009

I figure while I'm waiting for my order to come in, I could share with you a couple cards I made with the Pun Fun set!

The first card I made was a birthday card for my mom. Just something simple with the little birdy on it. The PP isn't from SU!, it's Sara by Melissa Frances. (I'm still working on getting rid of my huuuuuuge stash from all those years of collecting pretty paper and not knowing what to do with it.)

The second card is a birthday card for my sister. (Sister, if you're reading this, you better look away now.)

Seriously, consider yourself warned!

You can't blame me for ruining your surprise anymore!

I had a bit of fun with hers. I played around a bit with some dimensionals to make it pop out more. But the thing I really like doing is putting things on the inside of my cards as well!

My First Order

June 1, 2009

Despite being really sick last night and having an incredibly high fever that left me almost immobile, I woke up at 3am this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. So what do I do? Log on to Stampin' Up of course because today's the day they release the Last Chance list and give us Demonstrators a sneak peek at some of the things in the new catalog!

Let me just say, I don't think I have ever been this organized about any other purchase in my life. I had it all meticulously done up in an Excel file so that when I got into the system, I could just click and go.

As the title suggests, this was my very first order so I was a little anxious but it turned out to be sooo simple. I can't wait for all my stuff to get here. I'll do another post then to share with you all the fun stuff I got!
